Gran Canaria (LPA) Airport is located on Grand
Canaria Island, Spain, more precisely on the Bay of
Gando, 19 km (12 mi) away from Las Palmas de Grand
Canaria and 25 km (16 mi) away from the popular tourist
areas in the south. In 2010 it registered 9.5 million
passengers, thus being the fifth busiest airport in
Spain.
The airport was inaugurated in 1930, but it was only in
1966 that the control tower was completed. Then, one
year later, a transmission station was put into
operation. Nowadays, it is the largest gateway to the
Canary Islands.
This Spanish airport disposes of a single terminal which
is divided into three zones, as it follows: Zone A, used
for European Union flights, Zone B, handling
international flights outside the European Union and
Zone C, comprising flights to the other Canary Islands.
In order to increase the capacity of passengers, the
terminal will be extended at some point in the future.
